2002: The Inaugural RBDS
2002 was the inaugural year of the Red Bull Driver Search. A panel of expert 'undercover' scouts, headed by Danny Sullivan, 1985 Indy 500 winner and 1988 CART IndyCar Champion, surveyed the ranks of junior U.S. racing formulae and an elite group of 16 racers were invited to a test at the Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Beausset, France. They were as follows (listed alphabetically):

Michael Abbate, Las Vegas, NV
AJ Allmendinger, Los Gatos, FL
Bobby East, Brownsburg, IN
Paul Edwards, Santa Maria, CA
Phil Giebler, Oxnard, CA
Joey Hand, Chardon, OH
Ryan Hunter-Reay, Boca Raton, FL
Patrick Long, Oak Park, CA
Grant Maiman,  New London, WI
Rocky Moran, Jr., Coto de Caza, CA
Joel Nelson, Reno, NV
Scott Poirier, Deerfield Beach, FL
Boston Reid, Kokomo, IN
Bryan Sellers, Centerville, OH
Scott Speed, Manteca, CA
Bobby Wilson, Oconomowoc, WI

Ultimately four winners were chosen and placed in a junior racing formula in Europe, supported by Red Bull. Grant Maiman spent the 2003 season in Formula Renault, Scott Speed in British F3, Joel Nelson in Formula Euro 3000 and Paul Edwards in Formula Nissan.
